What is the better part?
Elena was the mother of 3 daughters and a son who worked in different places. It was very difficult for the family to find some family time because all of them were busy with their own jobs. Elena was 68, she was the family organizer, who remembered the birthdays and initiated video calls to wish them and so on.
One evening, Elena felt overwhelmed because of her failed attempts to bring her family closer. As she sat near the kitchen, she saw an old rosary with rushed beads hanging on the wall. She had not used this rosary for a long time.
She took courage to take the old rosary and pray. As she started praying Hail Marys, something unexpected happened. She felt someone was listening to her, felt comforting and relaxed. All her worries about the future of her family were slowly fading away. She found herself simply in the present.
The next morning, a surprising call came from her daughter who said, Mom, I was thinking about you last night around 8pm. In the same way her other daughters and son too made phone calls to her and mentioned their thoughts about the mom who was struggling to bring the family together and felt to reach out to her.
Elena simply smiled, and understood it was the time she was praying the Rosary. And she explained to her children the miracle that happened. And from then on, the whole family made it a point even in the busiest schedule, whether online or offline they would come together to pray the rosary.
Yes my dear friends, Rosary is a powerful tool that can be used for any occasion, whether we are fighting evil or while we need a pillow of comfort. For everything the rosary is suitable.
Today the church honours our lady of rosary. So it is an important occasion to draw inspiration for us to start praying rosary. The rosary helps us to discern the will of God in our lives. It helps us to be the better part of our lives.
We are given the familiar story of Martha and Mary for our gospel reflection. Jesus visits their home in Bethany, and he encounters two different actions of the same sisters. One sprang into action like cleaning, cooking, preparing for a perfect welcome for the guest. Meanwhile the other just sat at the feet of Jesus listening to His words.
One is active with many tasks of traditions which naturally anyone intends to do. But the other is passive, avoiding those traditional activities. What do you think is good? Being active or passive?
But Jesus upholds Mary’s act of listening at the feet of the Lord. This passage is not a condemnation of tradition or hospitality. Martha’s actions to welcome Jesus are very beautiful and necessary. But what is important here to notice is her anxiety, distraction and her inability to see the very person she is serving.
Mary is represented as the contemplative heart which gives importance to relationship over activity, presence over productivity. She represents that sometimes the most important thing we can do is simply be with Jesus. That is the better part.
In Psalm 46:10, God commands, Be still, and know that I am God. The Hebrew word used here for “Be still” is raphah which means to let go, to stop striving. Just be with the Lord leaving all the worries with him, because he is the one who takes care of us.
In Matthew 6: 26, Jesus says, Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life. Because our anxiety can prevent us from seeing the goodness of life. Not only that we may fail even to see Jesus in our lives. That is what Jesus is condemning today in the gospel.
How to attain that better part? It is through the Holy Rosary, because the rosary helps us to sit at the feet of Jesus through the meditation on his mysteries while our fingers move through the familiar prayers.
St. Thérèse of Lisieux, says about praying rosary in her book Story of a Soul, as, “I have to admit that the rosary is a bit difficult for me to say… I know I don’t say it very well. But I continue to say it, because I know that our Blessed Mother loves me so much, and that is enough for me.” It is difficult to pray a rosary everyday, but it is powerful and worth using.
October 7 – Challenge for the day
In our everyday lives, we have emails to answer, children to drive to activities, elderly parents to check on, bills to pay, careers to advance. So we can justify sitting still with many activities. We may feel overwhelmed and exhausted.
Here comes the example of Mary, in lives loaded with many schedules and activities our being with the Lord can become an anchor, a daily choice to prioritize relationship with God over endless tasks.
Sometimes today’s social media becomes a trap for us to be busy and distracted. This can be called Martha’s Modern Trap. Martha’s service is necessary but it should not hide the reality of being with God. We can read the Bible in our mobiles, listen to devotional songs, watch spiritual videos but if we fail to sit with the Lord then these actions too become a trap.
Now it is our choice to decide on our priorities. What is our better part to choose? Activities or Being Still, Efficiency or Faithfulness, God or Wealth. Choose the best answer for you today.
Let our Prayer for today be,
Lord Jesus, in our Martha moments of worry and distraction, help us choose Mary’s better part. Through the intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary, teach us to find You in the quiet rhythm of prayer, to choose presence over productivity, and to trust that relationship with You is the one thing we truly need. Amen.
