The Worst Midnight Moments

Shiny was a single mother in Delhi who raised 3 sons. She was self-reliant, independent, and thought to herself that she needed no one for her help.

One night while David was coming back from the office, one drunkard truck driver had an accident with David’s car. David was serious and Doctors said that they have to perform immediate surgery and it needs ₹47,00,000 but Shiny had no money.

Desperate, while she was thinking whom to approach, her sister Jenny’s face came to her mind. But she had not spoken to Jenny for the past 12 years. Now she had no choice but to knock her. So, she went at 3:00 AM and knocked. Immediately Jenny arranged a wire transfer and emptied all the savings that she had kept for her children’s future.

Shiny asked why she did so even after my rival-approach to you. Jenny said, Because you are my sister and you finally asked me what you need.

Life always rewards those who are shrewd, bold and persistent. That we can see in business, studies and even in relationships. Those who give up never reach their goals.

In the gospel, Jesus narrates a striking story about perseverance. A man knocks asking for bread at his friend’s door at midnight. At first, the friend refuses but finally gives in. The reason to give is not friendship, but perseverance of the man.

Secondly, Jesus says, “And I tell you, ask and you will receive”. This asking, seeking and knocking are not a confirmation to get what we want quickly, but about staying faithful in prayer and trusting in God who will give what we need in due time.

Prayer and Persistence does not change God’s mind, but it changes our heart.

  • Every time we ask God, we grow in humility
  • Every time we seek truth, our faith deepens
  • Every time we knock on a door, our hope strengthens.

God may not open the door for us immediately, but he always hears. And at the perfect timing he will open for us.

There are many saints who persistently asked, sought and knocked, like for example,

St. Monica whose persistent prayer gave fruit after 17 years for her son St. Augustine’s conversion.

Saint Padre Pio spent hours each day in prayer, often praying the same requests repeatedly for his spiritual children. When asked why he repeated the same prayers so often, he replied: “When you love someone, you never get tired of saying ‘I love you.’ Why should it be different with God?

Pope Saint John XXIII, before calling the Second Vatican Council, spent months in persistent prayer asking God for guidance.

So it is possible for us to be persistent.

October 9 – Challenge for the day

In our daily lives, we all face “midnight moments”—times when our resources are exhausted and we need help beyond our own capacity. For parents, it might be a child struggling with addiction, depression, or dangerous choices. We knock on heaven’s door night after night, pleading for wisdom, protection, and healing.

Students facing overwhelming academic challenges, impossible deadlines, or uncertain futures discover that persistent prayer doesn’t just change circumstances—it changes them. The act of repeatedly bringing our concerns to God develops trust, patience, and often reveals solutions we couldn’t see in our anxiety.

In marriages going through difficult seasons, couples learn that persistent prayer together creates intimacy with God that spills over into intimacy with each other. When spouses take turns knocking on heaven’s door for their relationship, they often find that God transforms their hearts even when circumstances remain challenging.

Employees facing job loss, health crises, or financial difficulties discover that persistent prayer develops spiritual muscles they didn’t know they had. Like Elena in our opening story, sometimes our greatest growth comes when we finally admit we can’t handle life alone.

Even in everyday struggles—dealing with difficult neighbors, managing aging parents’ needs, navigating teenage children’s attitudes—persistent prayer becomes a lifeline that connects our human limitations to divine resources.

Jesus promises that persistent prayer will be answered: “Ask, and it will be given you.” But the ultimate gift God offers is Himself through the Holy Spirit. Sometimes we receive exactly what we requested. Sometimes we receive something better. Always, if we persist in prayer, we receive God’s presence.

So let us keep asking, keep seeking, and keep knocking—
not to pressure God,
but to remain close to Him in faith and love.

Let our Prayer be

Lord Jesus, You teach us to come boldly to Your Father with our needs, our fears, and our deepest longings. Give us the holy boldness to persist in prayer even when the answer seems delayed. Help us trust that our midnight knocking will be heard by a Father who loves us perfectly and gives us His very Spirit. Amen.
