Luke 11:29–32

Stop Looking for Proof and Start Living

Let’s be honest – we all like to see evidence before we make big decisions. We want proof that something will work before we try it. We look for guarantees before we commit to anything important.

This is natural and often wise. But when it comes to faith, constantly demanding signs can actually make us less able to see the truth, not more.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is surrounded by people who keep asking Him to prove Himself with miraculous signs. They want spectacular shows of power before they will believe in Him.

But Jesus gives them a surprising answer:

“This generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given except the sign of Jonah.”

What Was the Sign of Jonah?

Let’s remember Jonah’s story:

The Background

1. God told Jonah to go to Nineveh (a wicked city) and warn them to change their ways.
2. Jonah ran away because he didn’t want to do it.
3. God sent a great fish to swallow Jonah for three days.
4. When Jonah finally obeyed and preached to the people of Nineveh, something amazing happened.

The entire city repented! From the king down to the ordinary citizens, everyone changed their hearts and turned back to God.

The Key Point

Jonah didn’t perform any miracles. He just delivered God’s message. The people didn’t wait for signs – they heard the truth and acted on it immediately.

The Queen of Sheba’s Example

Jesus also mentions the Queen of the South (the Queen of Sheba). Here’s her story:

1. She heard about Solomon’s wisdom from far away.
2. She traveled a great distance to meet him and hear his teachings.
3. She listened carefully and recognized the truth when she heard it.
4. She didn’t demand proof – she was open to learning.

She was willing to seek truth and act on it without needing miraculous signs first.

Then Jesus says something that should make us stop and think:

“Something greater than Jonah is here. Something greater than Solomon is here.”

What He Means:

• If the people of Nineveh repented when they heard Jonah’s simple message
• If the Queen of Sheba traveled far to hear Solomon’s wisdom
• How much more should people respond to Jesus Himself?

Jesus is saying: “You have something even better right in front of you. Why are you still asking for more proof?”

The Real Problem Isn’t Lack of Evidence

Jesus identifies the real issue:

“The problem is not the lack of light. The problem is a closed heart.”

What This Means:

• It’s not that God hasn’t given us enough information.
• It’s that we’re not willing to act on what we already know.
• We use “needing more proof” as an excuse to avoid changing our lives.

How We Delay and Postpone

We all do this in different ways:

We Delay Obedience by Asking for Signs:

• “I will start being more generous when I see a clear sign from God”
• “I will forgive that person when God shows me they’ve really changed”
• “I will change my lifestyle when I’m absolutely certain it’s what God wants”

We Postpone Conversion by Waiting for Certainty:

• “I need to understand everything about faith before I can believe”
• “I will start following Jesus when all my doubts are gone”
• “I will change my behavior when I feel more motivated”

The Sign Jesus Did Give Us

Jesus says the only sign this generation will get is “the sign of Jonah.”

What This Means:

1. Just like Jonah spent three days in the fish, Jesus spent three days in the tomb.
2. Just like Jonah came out alive, Jesus rose from the dead.
3. Just like Jonah’s message brought repentance, Jesus’ death and resurrection calls us to turn our hearts to God.

What We Need to Do Today

Instead of constantly testing God and asking for more signs, we need to:

1. Stop Testing and Start Listening

• Pay attention to what God is already telling us through His word, through our conscience, through the people around us.
• Stop looking for dramatic signs and start noticing the quiet ways God speaks.

2. Repent of What We Know Is Wrong

• We all know some things in our lives that need to change
• We don’t need more information but we need more courage to act
• We must start with the obvious stuff first

3. Act on the Light We Already Have

• Use the knowledge and grace which God has already given us
• Take the next right step, even if we can’t see the whole staircase
• Trust, so that more light will come as we walk forward

The Beautiful Promise

When we stop demanding signs and start living on the truth we already have:

1. Our hearts will become more open to see God’s presence
2. We will realize that in Christ, God has given us more than just a sign
3. He has given us Himself: His love, His presence, His very life

A Simple Prayer for Today

Jesus, forgive us for always wanting more proof when you’ve already given us everything we need. Help us to stop testing you and start trusting you. Give us the courage to act on the light we already have, and open our hearts to see that you are truly here with us. Amen.

My Dear remember this, sometimes the greatest sign of faith is not needing a sign at all, but simply trusting in God’s love and acting on what we already know to be true.
