Feast of Saint Luke, Evangelist
Luke 10:1–9

Today we celebrate Saint Luke, one of the most fascinating people in the New Testament. Here’s what made him special:

He Was a Physician:

  • Luke was a medical doctor who spent his life healing people’s bodies
  • He understood suffering and had compassion for the sick
  • He knew how to observe carefully and diagnose problems

He Was Paul’s Companion:

  • Luke traveled with Saint Paul on his missionary journeys
  • He was there during Paul’s imprisonment and difficulties
  • He was a loyal friend who stayed when others left

He Was a Careful Writer:

  • Luke wrote the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles
  • He interviewed eyewitnesses and researched carefully
  • He wanted to tell the story of Jesus and the early Church accurately

Luke served the Church in two beautiful ways: with healing hands and with written words.

In today’s Gospel, we see Jesus preparing to send out 72 of His followers to spread the message of God’s kingdom. This isn’t just the 12 apostles – it’s a much larger group of ordinary people.

Jesus’ Instructions Are Full of Wisdom:

1. Start with Prayer:

“The harvest is rich, but the laborers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers.”

What this means:

  • There are many people ready to hear about God’s love
  • But there aren’t enough people willing to share it
  • We need to pray for more people to step up and serve

2. Go with Courage and Humility:

“Go! I am sending you like lambs among wolves.”

What this means:

  • You might face opposition or rejection
  • Don’t respond with aggression or force
  • Stay gentle and peaceful, like lambs

3. Travel Light:

“Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals.”

What this means:

  • Don’t be weighed down by too many possessions
  • Trust that God will provide what you need
  • Focus on the mission, not on comfort or security

4. Bring Peace:

“Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household.'”

What this means:

  • Be a person who brings calm and goodness wherever you go
  • Don’t create drama or conflict
  • Let people feel God’s peace through your presence

5. Stay Where You’re Welcome:

“Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you.”

What this means:

  • Don’t spend your time trying to convince people who don’t want to listen
  • Invest your energy in people who are open to God’s message
  • Be grateful for whatever hospitality you receive

6. Heal and Proclaim:

“Cure the sick, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God is very near to you.'”

What this means:

  • Help people in practical ways (healing, feeding, comforting)
  • Then tell them that God’s love is close and available to them
  • Show God’s kingdom with your actions, then explain it with your words

The Pattern of Christian Mission

From Jesus’ instructions, we can see a clear pattern for how Christians are meant to share their faith:

1. Mission Begins with Prayer:

  • Before we do anything else, we ask God to send more workers
  • We don’t try to do God’s work without God’s help
  • We recognize that changing hearts is God’s job, not just ours

2. It Continues with Trust:

  • We go out even when it seems risky
  • We trust that God will provide what we need
  • We don’t wait until we feel completely ready or safe

3. It is Sustained by Simplicity and Peace:

  • We don’t need fancy equipment or complicated strategies
  • We focus on being peaceful, helpful people
  • We let God’s love shine through our simple acts of kindness

4. The Message is Near and Concrete:

“The kingdom of God is very near to you.”

  • We don’t just talk about heaven as something far away
  • We show people that God’s love is available right now
  • We make God’s kingdom real through our actions today

Luke’s Example: Mercy Must Be Written and Lived

Saint Luke shows us two ways to serve God and others:

Words That Tell Jesus:

  • Luke wrote down the stories of Jesus so future generations could know Him
  • He preserved the accounts of Jesus’ miracles, teachings, and love
  • His Gospel has brought millions of people to faith

Hands That Heal in His Name:

  • Luke used his medical skills to heal people’s bodies
  • He showed God’s care through practical help
  • He combined spiritual ministry with physical healing

October 18, 2025: Three Works Today in Luke’s Spirit

Inspired by Saint Luke’s example and Jesus’ instructions to the 72:

1. Pray for Laborers by Name:

  • Think of specific people you know who could serve God better
  • Pray that God would call them to use their talents for His kingdom
  • Ask God to raise up more teachers, helpers, healers, and faithful friends

Example: “God, please call my friend Mary to use her teaching gift to serve you. Help my coworker Sam see how he could use his business skills for good.”

2. Offer Peace and Stay with One Person Who is Ready:

  • Look for someone who seems open to friendship or help
  • Don’t waste time trying to convince people who aren’t interested
  • Invest your energy in the person who welcomes what you have to offer

Example: Instead of arguing with someone who mocks your faith, spend time encouraging someone who’s genuinely struggling and wants support.

3. Do One Act of Healing, Then Say a Quiet Word of Faith:

First, help someone in a practical way:

  • Listen to someone who needs to talk
  • Visit someone who is lonely or sick
  • Give something to someone who has a need

Then, share a simple word about God’s love:

  • “God really cares about you”
  • “I’m praying for you”
  • “God’s love is closer than you think”

Saint Luke’s Lesson for Us

Saint Luke teaches us to:

Speak Christ Clearly:

  • Tell the story of Jesus in ways people can understand
  • Write, speak, or show others who Jesus really is
  • Don’t make the Gospel complicated – keep it simple and true

Carry His Mercy Lightly:

  • Don’t be weighed down by worry, possessions, or pride
  • Travel through life ready to help wherever you’re needed
  • Let God’s love flow through you naturally and easily

Last words, You don’t need to be a doctor or a writer to follow Saint Luke’s example. Whatever your skills – listening, cooking, encouraging, organizing, or anything else – God can use them to heal others and share His love. The kingdom of God is very near, and He wants to show it through you.

A Simple Prayer for Today

Saint Luke, you served God with both healing hands and faithful words. Help me to follow your example. Jesus, you are still sending workers into the harvest. Make me one of them. Help me to pray for others to serve you, to bring peace wherever I go, and to show your kingdom through simple acts of love. Let me speak clearly about your love and carry your mercy lightly wherever I go. Amen.
