Faithful Lamps for Jesus’ Ultimate Return

Tuesday of the Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time
Luke 12:35–38

Jesus gives us a simple instruction: Be ready.

But ready for what? And how do we stay ready when we don’t know exactly when what we’re waiting for will happen?

Today’s Gospel gives us a beautiful picture of what it means to live in readiness for Christ – not with anxiety or panic, but with steady love and faithful service.

Jesus tells the story of servants whose master has gone to a wedding feast. They don’t know exactly when he’ll return – it could be late in the evening, in the middle of the night, or just before dawn.

Here,

What the Good Servants Do:

  • They keep their lamps burning so they can see and be seen
  • They stay dressed and ready to work instead of going to sleep
  • They listen for their master’s footsteps at the door
  • They’re prepared to open the door immediately when he arrives

When the master comes home and finds his servants still awake and ready, he does something shocking:

“He will gird himself and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them.”

Think about this: The master, who has every right to expect service, instead serves his faithful servants. He puts on an apron, sits them down at his own table, and waits on them like they’re honored guests.

What Readiness Really Looks Like?

Readiness is not panic. It’s not running around frantically trying to get everything perfect at the last minute.

True Readiness Has Three Characteristics:

1. Steady Love in Ordinary Tasks:

  • You don’t need to do extraordinary things to be ready for Jesus
  • You stay ready by doing ordinary things with extraordinary love
  • You serve faithfully in small, daily responsibilities

2. Faith That Works in the Second and Third Watch:

The “watches” were divisions of the night:

  • First watch: Evening (6 PM – 10 PM)
  • Second watch: Late night (10 PM – 2 AM)
  • Third watch: Before dawn (2 AM – 6 AM)

What this means: Your faith doesn’t give up when time passes and Jesus doesn’t come when you expected. You keep serving faithfully even in the “middle of the night” times of life.

3. Hope That Does Not Dim When the House is Quiet:

  • Even when everything seems quiet and nothing seems to be happening
  • Even when you feel alone or forgotten
  • Even when God seems distant
  • You keep your lamp of hope burning bright

How We Wait for Christ by Doing His Will Now

The best way to get ready for Jesus’ return is not to sit around waiting, but to actively do what He’s already asked us to do.

Prayer on Time:

  • Keep your regular prayer times instead of skipping them
  • Don’t wait until you “feel like” praying – pray because it’s time to pray
  • Make prayer a steady habit, not just something you do in emergencies

Work Done Honestly:

  • Do your job, your schoolwork, your household duties with integrity
  • Don’t cut corners or do sloppy work
  • Remember that all honest work can be service to God

Mercy Given Quickly:

  • When you see someone who needs help, don’t hesitate
  • Forgive people promptly instead of holding grudges
  • Be quick to show kindness and slow to show anger

Small Duties Carried with Joy:

  • Find joy in the little tasks that nobody else notices
  • Serve cheerfully instead of complaining about what you have to do
  • Remember that faithfulness in small things prepares you for bigger responsibilities

Remember: You stay ready for Jesus not by constantly looking at the sky, but by faithfully doing His will on earth. Keep your lamp burning through prayer, service, and love. When He comes – whether at the end of your life or the end of time – He wants to find you faithfully serving, not frantically trying to get ready.

A Simple Prayer for Today

Jesus, help me to be like the faithful servants who kept their lamps burning through the long night. When I’m tempted to give up or get lazy, remind me that you see every act of service and love. Help me to pray on time, work honestly, show mercy quickly, and carry my small duties with joy. Let me be ready for you not by worrying about the future, but by faithfully serving you today. And thank you for the promise that when you come, you will serve those who have served you faithfully. Amen.
