An Essential Fire Jesus Came to Bring

Thursday of the Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time
Luke 12:49–53

Today Jesus says something that might shock us:

“I have come to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already blazing!”

This doesn’t sound like the gentle Jesus we often picture – the one holding lambs and blessing children. But this is the same Jesus, speaking with passionate love about His mission.

He also says something puzzling:

“Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.”

Wait – isn’t Jesus the Prince of Peace? Yes, He is. But the path to true peace sometimes goes through necessary division.

What is that Fire?

The fire Jesus wants to spread is the Holy Spirit:

• Fire that purifies hearts like gold is refined in fire
• Fire that gives warmth to those who are cold toward God
• Fire that provides light in the darkness of confusion and sin
• Fire that spreads from person to person, igniting love and faith

The Baptism is His Passion:

Jesus mentions “a baptism with which I must be baptized”:

• This refers to His suffering and death on the cross
• Just as baptism involves going under water and coming up clean, Jesus had to go through death to bring us new life
• He was eager for this because He knew it would open the way for the Spirit’s fire to spread

Love Burned in Him to the Cross:

Jesus’ fire wasn’t anger – it was love:

• Love so intense it drove Him to sacrifice everything for our salvation
• Love so pure it couldn’t tolerate anything that separates us from God
• Love so strong it was willing to face death to defeat death itself

That same love still burns today – to purify our hearts and to send us out as carriers of His fire.

How Fire Works?

Fire does two main things, and Jesus’ spiritual fire does the same:

Fire Warms:

• It comforts people who are cold – those who feel distant from God or unloved
• It brings people together around its warmth
• It provides light in dark times

Fire Refines:

• It burns away impurities in metal, making it pure and valuable
• It unsettles things that need to be moved
• It destroys what is harmful while preserving what is good

Jesus’ fire works the same way:

• It comforts the humble who recognize their need for God
• It unsettles the complacent who think they don’t need God or change
• It burns away sin and selfishness while strengthening love and faith

When the Gospel Burns our Heart

When someone really encounters Jesus and His Gospel catches fire in their life, things change:

Comforts Rearrange:

• Priorities shift – what used to seem most important might not be anymore
• Values change – money, status, and pleasure might become less appealing
• Goals adjust – serving God and others becomes more important than serving yourself

Some Relationships Resist:

• Family members might not understand your new commitment to faith
• Friends might feel judged by your changed behavior
• Coworkers might be uncomfortable with your honesty and integrity

Truth Divides Before It Heals:

• When you start living by Jesus’ truth, it highlights the lies others are living
• Your commitment to what’s right might expose what’s wrong in your relationships
• Some people will choose to change with you, others will resist

This is Not Anger – then what?

It’s important to understand: Jesus isn’t bringing division because He’s angry or wants to hurt people. He brings clarity that naturally results in division:

Jesus Separates:

• Lie from truth – He shows what’s really true versus what just seems true
• Idols from God – He reveals what we’re worshiping instead of the real God
• Fear from faith – He helps us choose trust over worry

The Process:

1. Jesus brings light that shows things as they really are
2. Some people welcome the light and change their lives accordingly
3. Others prefer the darkness and resist the light
4. This creates division between those who follow the light and those who don’t

Jesus doesn’t cause the division to be mean – the division happens because people make different choices about the truth.

Peace Without Truth is Not His Peace

Jesus is the Prince of Peace, but He offers true peace, not false peace:

False Peace:

• Avoiding conflict by ignoring problems
• Keeping everyone happy by never standing for anything
• Maintaining relationships by compromising truth
• “Peace” that comes from everyone agreeing to live with lies

True Peace:

• Harmony that comes from everyone living in truth
• Relationships built on honesty and genuine love
• Unity around what’s right, not just what’s comfortable
• Peace that may require temporary division to achieve lasting healing

Sometimes you have to disturb false peace to find true peace.

Three Responses to His Fire

Based on Jesus’ teaching, here are three ways to respond to the fire He wants to bring:

1. Invite It

Pray for God’s fire to purify your heart:

• Ask God to show you what’s getting in the way of your love for Him and others
• Be willing to let go of things that are comfortable but spiritually harmful
• Invite the Holy Spirit to burn away selfishness, pride, fear, and other barriers to love

Example prayer: “God, let your fire burn in me. Show me what needs to change in my life, and give me courage to let you burn away everything that keeps me from loving you and others well.”

2. Endure It

Be prepared for the consequences of living like Jesus:

• At home: Your family might not understand your commitment to prayer, forgiveness, or moral standards
• At work: Your honesty and integrity might make others uncomfortable or even cause conflict
• In social situations: Your values might clash with what others consider “normal” or “fun”

Remember: The goal isn’t to be difficult or judgmental, but to be faithful to what you know is right, even when it’s hard.

3. Extend It

Let Jesus’ fire spread through you to others:

A Brave Act of Charity:

• Help someone even though it’s inconvenient or might be misunderstood
• Forgive someone who has hurt you deeply
• Stand up for someone who’s being mistreated

A Clear Word for Christ:

• Share honestly about how Jesus has changed your life
• Speak up for what’s right when everyone else is staying quiet
• Defend the truth when it’s being attacked or ignored

October 23, 2025: What is the promise for the day?

Jesus promises that His true peace will come, even after necessary divisions:

Let His Fire Catch in Us

When His Fire Catches in Us:

• We become carriers of His light in dark places
• We bring His warmth to people who are cold toward God
• We help purify situations that need cleansing
• We spread His true peace wherever we go

Even in Division:

• We maintain our love for those who oppose us
• We continue to pray for those who don’t understand
• We trust that God is working even in difficult situations
• We keep carrying His light no matter how others respond

Once again remember this, Jesus’ fire is love, not anger. It divides not to destroy, but to purify and heal. When you let His fire burn in your heart, you become an agent of His true peace in the world, even when that peace requires going through temporary division first.

A Simple Prayer for Today

Jesus, you came to bring fire to the earth, and you want that fire to burn in my heart. I invite your Spirit to purify me, to burn away everything that dulls my love for you and others. Give me courage to endure the cost of honest discipleship, even when it causes division in my relationships. Help me to extend your fire through brave acts of charity and clear words of faith. Let your fire catch in me so that I can carry your light to others. And when division comes, help me trust that your true peace will follow. Amen.
