Small Faith, Big Results

Memorial of Saint Leo the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church
Luke 17:1–6

In this short passage, Jesus addresses three of the most difficult challenges in Christian living:

  1. Not causing others to stumble spiritually
  2. Correcting people who sin against us
  3. Forgiving people repeatedly

When the apostles hear these tough requirements, they respond honestly: “Lord, increase our faith!” They’re basically saying, “This is too hard for us. We need more faith to do this.”

But Jesus surprises them: You don’t need more faith. You need to use the faith you already have. Even faith as small as a mustard seed can move a mulberry tree.

The Warning: Don’t Be a Stumbling Block

Jesus starts with a sobering warning: “It would be better for someone to have a millstone tied around their neck and be thrown into the sea than to cause one of these little ones to stumble.”

“Little ones” doesn’t just mean children (though it includes them). It means anyone who is spiritually vulnerable – new Christians, people questioning faith, those struggling with doubt, or anyone whose relationship with God could be easily damaged.

Stumbling blocks come – that’s just reality in a broken world. But Jesus warns us not to become one ourselves through:

  • Bad examples that make Christianity look hypocritical
  • Harsh words that drive people away from God
  • Selfish actions that make following Jesus seem unattractive
  • Scandals that damage people’s ability to trust or believe

The Command: Correct and Forgive

Then Jesus gives two more difficult commands:

Correct sin when it happens: “If your brother sins, rebuke him.” Don’t just ignore it and hope it goes away. Love people enough to speak the truth about their destructive choices.

Forgive repeatedly: “If he repents, forgive him. Even if he sins against you seven times in a day and says ‘I repent,’ forgive him.”

This sounds impossible. How can you keep forgiving someone who keeps hurting you? The disciples’ response makes perfect sense: “We need more faith to do this!”

The Surprise: You Already Have Enough Faith

Jesus’ answer is shocking: “If you have faith like a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.”

The mustard seed was the smallest seed people knew about. Jesus isn’t saying we need giant faith – He’s saying we need genuine faith, no matter how small.

The issue isn’t the size of our faith; it’s whether our faith is alive and obedient. A tiny seed that’s planted and watered will grow into a huge tree. A huge seed that just sits in a drawer does nothing.

Saint Leo the Great: Living Example

Saint Leo the Great (Pope from 440-461 AD) shows us how to live out these difficult teachings:

He protected the vulnerable – defended the Church against heresies that would have led people astray, and stood up to political leaders who threatened religious freedom.

He taught truth with charity – corrected errors clearly but without harshness, helping people understand doctrine without attacking their dignity.

He showed mercy without compromising truth – forgave those who repented while still maintaining clear standards about right and wrong.

Leo combined clarity without harshness and mercy without softness on sin. This is the path for every Christian.

Three Questions for Self-Examination

1. Have My Words or Habits Made It Harder for Someone to Believe?

Think honestly about your example as a Christian:

  • Do your actions match your beliefs?
  • Have you said things that turned people off to faith?
  • Are there habits in your life that scandalize others or make Christianity look hypocritical?

2. Have I Delayed a Needed Rebuke or Withheld a Needed Pardon?

Sometimes love requires difficult conversations:

  • Is there someone you need to lovingly confront about destructive behavior?
  • Is there someone you need to forgive but you’ve been holding onto resentment?
  • Are you avoiding hard conversations that could actually help people?

3. Have I Waited for “More Faith” Instead of Using the Seed I Have?

We often postpone obedience, thinking we need to feel more ready:

  • What is God asking you to do that you’re putting off?
  • How might you be using “I don’t have enough faith” as an excuse for disobedience?
  • What small step of faith could you take today?

Three Works in Leo’s Spirit

1. Protect a “Little One”

Remove a stumbling block or shield someone who’s struggling.

Look for ways to make faith easier for vulnerable people:

  • Simplify a scandal – stop gossiping about church problems in front of new believers
  • End a bad example – quit a habit that makes Christianity look hypocritical
  • Shield a struggler – defend someone who’s being criticized while they’re working through spiritual struggles

2. Speak Truth Gently

Give one honest correction paired with an offer to help.

Think of someone who needs a loving rebuke about destructive behavior. Approach them with:

  • Clear truth about how their actions are harmful
  • Gentle spirit that shows you care about them as a person
  • Practical help to change, not just criticism of the problem

Example: “I care about you, and I’m worried that your drinking is hurting your family. What can I do to help you get the support you need?”

3. Forgive Promptly

Release a debt today and pray for the person by name.

Stop waiting for the perfect moment or the perfect feelings:

  • Choose to forgive someone who has hurt you, even if they haven’t apologized
  • Pray specifically for that person by name, asking God to bless them
  • Release the debt in your heart, even if you maintain appropriate boundaries

The Power of Small, Living Faith

A small seed of faithful obedience moves deep roots. You don’t need to feel ready, confident, or spiritually mature to start obeying Jesus. You just need to start.

When we use the mustard seed faith we already have:

  • The little ones will be safe – vulnerable people will be protected and encouraged in their faith
  • The wounded will be restored – people will experience healing through correction and forgiveness
  • Christ will be praised in His Church – our communities will become places where truth and mercy work together

Start Where You Are

Don’t wait for more faith. Don’t wait to feel more spiritual. Don’t wait until it’s easier.

Plant the small seed of faith you have today through one act of protection, one gentle correction, or one prompt forgiveness.

Like Saint Leo the Great, we can defend the vulnerable, speak truth in love, and show mercy without compromising what’s right. It starts with using the faith we already have, no matter how small it seems.

Let us Pray

Lord Jesus, help us use the faith You’ve already given us, even when it feels too small for the task. Give us wisdom to protect vulnerable people from stumbling blocks, courage to speak truth in love when correction is needed, and grace to forgive repeatedly without keeping score. Like Saint Leo the Great, help us combine clarity with gentleness and mercy with truth. Show us how to plant our small seeds of faith through concrete acts of obedience today. Amen.
