Welcome to today’s Catholic Daily Readings for Monday, 7 September 2026. Paul warns the Corinthians that a little corruption spreads like yeast through dough, and Jesus heals a man’s withered hand on the Sabbath, showing that love is never against God’s law. A day about cleaning out what harms us and doing good without delay.

First Reading

Paul confronts a serious sin being tolerated in the Corinthian community. He warns that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough, and calls them to clear out the old yeast of malice and evil and become a fresh, sincere batch, celebrating with the unleavened bread of purity and truth.

1 Corinthians 5:1-8

Brethren: It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among Gentiles, for a man has his father’s wife. And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you. For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord. Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 5: 5-6, 7, 12

Gospel

On the Sabbath, Jesus sees a man with a withered hand. The scribes and Pharisees watch to see if He will heal, hoping to accuse Him. Jesus asks whether it is lawful to do good or evil on the Sabbath, then heals the man, and His enemies are filled with fury.

Luke 6:6-11

On another Sabbath, Jesus entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him. But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” And after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored. But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

Short Reflection

Paul’s image is one every cook understands. A tiny bit of yeast, barely a pinch, works its way silently through a whole batch of dough until every part of it rises. Sin works the same way. The small compromise we tolerate, the little resentment we nurse, the corner we cut, doesn’t stay small. It spreads quietly through the whole of our life.

That’s why Paul says clear it out. Not to make us anxious, but to keep us free. A fresh batch, he calls it, made with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. God wants our hearts clean, not because He’s harsh, but because He knows what even a little corruption can do to us.

And then the Gospel shows the other side of the coin. Jesus heals on the Sabbath, and His critics are furious that He did good on the wrong day. But Jesus refuses to let rules become an excuse to withhold love. Clean out what harms you, yes, and never delay the good you can do today. That’s a whole spiritual life: empty of what corrupts, full of what heals.

Prayer

Lord, clear out of me the old yeast of resentment, compromise, and sin, before it spreads any further. Make me a fresh, honest batch, sincere and true. And give me the freedom of Jesus, to do good without delay, whatever the day, whatever the cost. Amen.

Reflection Thought for Today

Today is an ordinary weekday in Ordinary Time. Take a quiet moment to ask the Lord to show you one “small” thing in your life that has been quietly spreading, and one good deed you have been putting off. Clear out the first. Do the second today.
