Catholic Daily Readings for Thursday, 24 September 2026, expose the tired heart that keeps chasing something new but never finds peace. Ecclesiastes questions life’s endless cycles, while Herod hears about Jesus but remains trapped in restless curiosity.

First Reading

Ecclesiastes observes the repeating cycles of nature and human labour. Earthly life cannot satisfy the heart when it is treated as an endless search for novelty, achievement, and lasting control.

Ecclesiastes 1:2-11

Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun? A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains for ever. The sun rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises. The wind blows to the south and goes round to the north; round and round goes the wind, and on its circuits the wind returns. All streams run to the sea, but the sea is not full; to the place where the streams flow, there they flow again. All things are full of weariness; a man cannot utter it; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has been already in the ages before us. There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of later things yet to be among those who come after.

Responsorial Psalm

Response: O Lord, you have been our refuge, from generation to generation.

Gospel

Herod hears different reports about Jesus and becomes confused. He knows that John the Baptist has been killed, yet he keeps asking who Jesus is and seeks an opportunity to see Him.

Luke 9:7-9

At that time: Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he sought to see him.

Reflection

The Drawer Full of Yesterday’s New Things…

A man opened a drawer and found several old phones. Each had once felt exciting. He remembered waiting eagerly to buy them, learning their features, and showing them to friends. Now they lay together in silence, yesterday’s treasures covered with dust.

Ecclesiastes looks at life and sees the same hunger. We chase what is new, but excitement fades. Work begins again. News repeats itself. The heart grows tired because no created thing can carry the weight of our eternal desire.

Herod also wants something new. He hears reports about Jesus and wishes to see Him. Yet his curiosity does not become repentance. He wants an interesting sight, not a Lord who will question his choices.

There is a great difference between looking at Jesus and allowing Jesus to look at us. One creates a passing moment. The other begins conversion.

Faith is not another item placed inside a crowded drawer. Christ is not a passing wonder meant to entertain us. He is the eternal Word through whom our ordinary days receive meaning. Work, time, success, and loss remain empty when separated from Him. Offered to Him, even a hidden act of love reaches eternity.

What are you chasing because silence frightens you? Close the drawer for a moment. Stop asking only who Jesus is. Stand before Him and ask what must change because He is Lord.

Lord Jesus, my heart becomes tired when I search for lasting joy in passing things. Free me from shallow curiosity and lead me into a true encounter with You. Give meaning to my ordinary work, correct what must change within me, and become the centre of all that I seek. Amen.
