Finding The Happiness

In our daily lives, we tend to look up to people who have achieved great things. We respect those who are successful, smart, or powerful. But Jesus teaches us something different – that real happiness doesn’t come from what we accomplish, but from how well we listen to God.

The Woman’s Natural Praise

In today’s Gospel reading, we meet a woman who was genuinely impressed by Jesus. She called out to him, saying:

“How blessed is the mother who gave birth to you and nursed you!”

This was her natural way of showing admiration. She thought Jesus’ mother was the luckiest woman alive simply because she was his mother.

Jesus’ Surprising Response

But Jesus gave an unexpected answer. He said:

“Even more blessed are those who hear God’s word and obey it.”

Jesus wasn’t dismissing his mother or being disrespectful. Instead, he was teaching us something important: being close to Jesus physically isn’t as important as being close to him spiritually.

The real blessing doesn’t come from:

  1. Being born into the right family
  2. Being in the right place at the right time
  3. Having special privileges

The real blessing comes from:

  1. Choosing to listen to God
  2. Deciding to follow his teachings
  3. Living according to his word

Two Steps to True Blessedness

Step 1: Hearing God’s Word

This is just the beginning. We need to:

  • Pay attention when God speaks to us
  • Be open to his message
  • Take time to really listen

Step 2: Keeping God’s Word

This is the harder part. It means:

  • Having faith even when things are difficult
  • Being patient when we don’t see results right away
  • Showing love in our daily actions

Mary: The Perfect Example

Jesus’ own mother, Mary, shows us exactly what this looks like. Throughout her life, she:

  1. Listened carefully to what God was telling her
  2. Thought deeply about his messages
  3. Obeyed willingly, even when it was hard

Mary didn’t just hear God’s word – she let it change her life completely.

What This Means for Us Today

Being truly blessed isn’t about:

  • How much we know about religion
  • How many prayers we can recite
  • How often we talk about God

Being truly blessed is about:

  • How faithfully we live out what God teaches us
  • How we treat others with love and kindness
  • How we make God’s word real in our everyday choices

A Simple Prayer for Today

God, help us to really listen when you speak to us. Give us the strength to not just hear your word, but to live it out in everything we do – in our thoughts, our words, and our actions. Amen.
