Getting Our Priorities Straight or fail
Memorial of Saint Teresa of Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church
Luke 11:42–46
Have you ever met someone who counts every calorie in their food but ignores their health in other ways? Or someone who keeps their house perfectly clean but treats their family members poorly?
Jesus points out something similar in today’s Gospel. Some religious people were incredibly precise about tiny rules – like giving exactly one-tenth of their mint and herb gardens to God – but they completely ignored the big, important things like justice and love.
We can become experts at measuring small things while missing the great things entirely.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus uses strong language. He says “Woe” three times – which means “How terrible it will be for…” It’s like a warning siren.
Warning #1: Counting Herbs, Missing Hearts
“Woe to you who tithe mint and herbs but neglect justice and the love of God.”
What He Means:
- These people were so careful to give God exactly 10% of their tiny herb gardens
- But they didn’t care about treating people fairly
- They forgot that loving God and loving others are the most important things
Warning #2: Loving the Spotlight
“Woe to you who love front seats and public greetings.”
What He Means:
- They wanted the best seats in the synagogue where everyone could see them
- They loved being greeted respectfully in public
- Their religious life was really about getting attention and respect
Warning #3: Making Life Harder for Others
“Woe to you who load others with burdens but won’t lift a finger to help.”
What He Means:
- They created complicated rules that made life difficult for ordinary people
- But they wouldn’t do anything to actually help those who were struggling
- They made religion harder instead of making life better
Today we also remember Saint Teresa of Jesus (also called Teresa of Ávila), one of the greatest spiritual teachers in Christian history. She lived in Spain about 500 years ago and learned what really matters in the spiritual life.
Teresa’s Path to the True Center:
1. Prayer Begins Within
- Real prayer isn’t about saying the right words or praying for a certain amount of time
- It’s about having an honest conversation with God from your heart
- It starts inside you – in your thoughts, feelings, and deepest desires
2. Humility Opens the Door
- Humility means knowing who we really are – loved by God but not perfect
- It’s the opposite of needing front seats and public praise
- When we’re humble, we can actually receive God’s love
3. Detachment Clears the Room
- Detachment means not being controlled by things, status, or what people think
- It’s like cleaning out a cluttered room so there’s space for what matters
- We let go of the small things that distract us from the big things
4. Charity Fills the House
- Once our hearts have space, God fills them with love
- This love naturally flows out to other people
- We start caring more about serving others than impressing them
Teresa’s Key Insight:
“If the heart is ordered to God, the life will be ordered to love.”
This means: When we get our relationship with God right on the inside, everything else falls into place on the outside.
Moving from Image to Interior
Jesus and Saint Teresa both call us to make an important shift:
From Image to Interior:
- Stop worrying so much about how we look to others
- Start caring about who we really are inside
From Display to Devotion:
- Stop performing our faith for an audience
- Start having a real relationship with God
From Rules That Crush to Truth That Frees:
- Stop using religion to make life harder for people
- Start using faith to bring freedom and joy
From Counting to Compassion:
- Stop obsessing over tiny religious details
- Start focusing on justice and love
Three Simple Works for Today
1. Examine the Motive Before the Act
- Before you do something “good,” ask yourself why
- Are you doing it to help someone, or to look good?
- Are you serving God, or serving your image?
2. Choose the Hidden Service Over the Visible Seat
- Look for ways to help that nobody will notice
- Do good things without getting credit
- Serve in the background instead of seeking the spotlight
3. Lift One Burden You Didn’t Place
- Help someone with a problem you didn’t cause
- Make someone’s day easier, even though it’s not your responsibility
- Be part of the solution instead of adding to the problem
The Beautiful Result:
“When God is enough, show and self fade, and our neighbor finds rest.”
When we find our satisfaction in God:
- We stop needing to show off
- We stop being obsessed with ourselves
- Other people feel peaceful around us because we’re not competing with them or using them
A Simple Prayer for Today
Jesus, help us to see the difference between what’s small and what’s great. Saint Teresa, pray for us that we might learn to pray from our hearts and serve from love. Help us to care more about justice and love than about looking good to others. Make us people who bring rest to our neighbors instead of burdens. Amen.
Finally, God is more interested in the love in your heart than the perfection of your performance. Focus on the weightier that matters like justice and love then, and everything else will find its proper place.
