Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Luke 18:1–8
Be honest – how long do you usually keep praying about something before you give up? A few days? A few weeks? Maybe a few months if it’s really important?
We live in a world of instant everything. We’re used to getting what we want quickly – fast food, instant messages, same-day delivery. So when we pray and don’t see immediate results, we often assume God isn’t listening or doesn’t care.
But today, Jesus tells us a story that teaches something different: God wants us to pray always and not lose heart.
Jesus tells about two very different people:
The Widow:
- Had no political power or social influence
- Was fighting for justice in a legal case
- Had no money to bribe anyone
- Only had one thing going for her: she wouldn’t give up
The Unjust Judge:
- Had all the power in the courtroom
- Didn’t fear God or respect people
- Only cared about his own comfort
- Was corrupt and selfish
What Happened:
The widow kept coming back to the judge’s court, day after day, demanding justice. Finally, the judge said to himself:
“This widow is driving me crazy! I don’t care about God or people, but I’m going to give her what she wants just to get her to stop bothering me!”
Jesus’ Point: If This Works with a Bad Judge…
Jesus explains the lesson:
“If an unjust judge will eventually give in to persistent pleading, how much more will God – who is perfectly just and loving – hear His chosen people who cry to Him day and night?”
The Logic is Simple:
- A corrupt judge who doesn’t care about anyone finally gave in to persistence
- God is perfectly good and loves us more than we can imagine
- Therefore, God will definitely respond to our persistent prayers
But There’s a Key Difference:
- The unjust judge gave in because he was annoyed
- God responds because He loves us and wants what’s best for us
- The judge acted to get rid of the widow
- God acts to help and heal us
The Sharp Question Jesus Asks
At the end of the story, Jesus asks something that should make us think:
“When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?”
What He’s Really Asking:
- Will people still be trusting God when times get tough?
- Will they keep praying even when answers seem slow in coming?
- Or will they give up and stop believing that God cares?
This question is still relevant today. In a world where everything happens fast, will we have the faith to keep praying, keep trusting, and keep believing in God’s goodness even when we have to wait?
What Persistent Prayer Really Is?
Jesus isn’t teaching us to bother God until He gives in. Real perseverance in prayer is much deeper than that:
It’s Not Noise – It’s Faith Staying at the Door:
- We keep praying not because God doesn’t hear us
- But because prayer keeps our hearts connected to His heart
- Every time we pray, we’re saying “I still believe You care”
It’s Hope Refusing to Go Away:
- Even when circumstances look hopeless, we keep hoping
- We refuse to let despair win
- We choose to believe that God has good plans, even when we can’t see them
It’s Love That Trusts the Father’s Heart and Timing:
- We trust that God knows what’s best for us
- We believe His timing is better than ours
- We pray persistently because we love God and trust His love for us
Praying for Justice Like the Widow
The widow in Jesus’ story wasn’t just asking for personal favors – she was demanding justice. This teaches us important things about prayer:
Name the Wrong:
- Be specific about what’s not right
- Don’t just pray vaguely – identify the real problems
- Call injustice what it is
Example: Instead of praying “Help the world be better,” pray “Help end hunger in our community” or “Bring healing to this broken relationship.”
Stand Your Ground:
- Don’t give up when the first prayer doesn’t seem to work
- Keep believing that what you’re asking for is right and good
- Don’t let discouragement make you quit
Return Again:
- Come back to God in prayer day after day
- Consistency matters more than perfect words
- Keep the conversation with God going
Two Things We Must Not Do
1. Don’t Surrender to Cynicism:
Cynicism says: “Prayer doesn’t work. God doesn’t care. Nothing will ever change.”
Faith says: “God is good. He hears me. He will act at the right time.”
2. Don’t Trade Prayer for Complaint:
Complaining says: “Look how bad everything is! Why doesn’t God do something?”
Prayer says: “God, I trust you to work in this situation. Show me how I can be part of the solution.”
October 19, 2025: Three Steady Practices
Based on Jesus’ teaching, here are three ways to develop persistent prayer:
1. Fix a Daily Time and Keep It:
- Choose a specific time each day to pray
- Make it a non-negotiable appointment with God
- Start small – even 5 minutes counts
- Be consistent, even if you don’t feel like it
Example: Every morning with your coffee, every evening before bed, or during your lunch break.
2. Hold One Intention Until God Answers or Redirects:
- Choose one important thing to pray about consistently
- Don’t give up after a week or a month
- Keep praying until you see God’s answer or sense Him leading you in a different direction
Example: Pray daily for a family member who’s struggling, for peace in a conflict situation, or for guidance about a major decision.
3. Pair Your Prayer with a Work of Mercy for Someone Vulnerable:
- Don’t just pray – also act
- Look for ways to help people who can’t help themselves
- Let your actions show that your prayers are sincere
Example: If you’re praying for the homeless, also volunteer at a shelter. If you’re praying for the sick, also visit someone who’s ill.
The Beautiful Promise
Jesus ends His teaching with a wonderful assurance:
“God will not delay forever. He will act.”
What This Means:
God Hears Every Prayer:
- No sincere prayer is ignored
- God knows exactly what you’re going through
- He cares about everything that concerns you
God’s Timing is Perfect:
- He doesn’t act too early or too late
- He sees the whole picture when we only see part of it
- His delays are not denials – they’re preparation
God Will Find Faith in Those Who Keep Knocking:
- People who keep praying show they still trust God
- Persistent prayer builds our faith stronger
- When God acts, He’ll find us still believing
The Widow’s Secret Weapon
The widow in Jesus’ story had no money, no connections, and no power – but she had something unstoppable: she refused to quit.
What We Can Learn:
- Your social status doesn’t matter to God
- Your bank account doesn’t determine if God will hear you
- Your education level doesn’t affect your prayer power
- What matters is that you keep coming, keep trusting, keep believing
Remember this, God is not a corrupt judge who needs to be pestered into caring. He’s a loving Father who wants the best for you. Keep praying, keep trusting, and keep believing. He hears every word, and He will act at just the right time.
A Simple Prayer for Today
God, you know how easily I get discouraged when my prayers don’t seem to be answered quickly. Help me to be like the persistent widow – never giving up, always trusting, always believing that you care. When I’m tempted to stop praying, remind me of your love and faithfulness. Give me the faith to keep knocking on your door, knowing that you hear me and will act at the perfect time. When Jesus comes, may He find faith in me. Amen.
