Essential Signs God Is Pointing At in Your Life
Friday of the Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time
Luke 12:54–59
We’re pretty good at reading weather signs:
- Dark clouds usually mean rain
- Certain winds bring heat
- We plan our days based on what we see in the sky
Jesus points out something almost comical about human nature:
“When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, ‘It is going to rain,’ and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and it happens.”
But then Jesus asks the hard question:
“You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?”
We can predict the weather, but we can’t read what God is doing in our lives right now.
The Problem: We Miss God’s Signs
We’re Good at External Signs:
- We notice changes in weather patterns
- We recognize when our car needs maintenance
- We can tell when our body needs rest or food
But We’re Bad at Spiritual Signs:
- We ignore the stirring in our conscience
- We miss the patterns in our relationships
- We don’t recognize when God is trying to get our attention
This is like being a great meteorologist but never reading the forecast for your own heart.
Settling Out of Court
Jesus gives a practical example that His listeners would immediately understand:
“As you go with your accuser before a magistrate, on the way make an effort to settle the case, or you may be dragged before the judge… and be put in prison. I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny.”
The Situation:
- Someone is taking you to court over a debt or dispute
- You have two choices: settle on the way or face the judge
- If you settle on the way, you might get a better deal
- If you wait for the judge, you’ll pay the full penalty plus costs
The Lesson:
It’s better to make peace now while you still can, rather than wait and face harsher consequences later.
God Already Speaks in the Signs Around Us
God isn’t silent – we’re just not paying attention. He speaks through:
In Conscience That Stings:
- That uncomfortable feeling when you know you’ve done something wrong
- The guilt that won’t go away until you make things right
- The inner voice telling you to apologize or change course
In a Word We Keep Hearing:
- The same Bible verse or spiritual message that keeps coming up
- Multiple people giving you similar advice
- A theme that keeps appearing in your prayers, reading, or conversations
In a Broken Peace That Asks for Repair:
- Relationships that feel strained or damaged
- Situations where you know something needs to be fixed
- The absence of peace in areas of your life where there should be harmony
God uses these signs to get our attention and guide us toward what needs to change.
Discernment is Not Complicated
Many people think spiritual discernment is mysterious and difficult. Jesus makes it simple:
Ask What Leads to Love of God and Neighbor:
- Does this choice help me love God more?
- Does this choice help me love others better?
- Does this bring me closer to or further from what Jesus would want?
Choose That:
- When you know what leads to love, choose it
- Don’t overthink it or look for complicated alternatives
- The path of love is usually the right path
Act Before Hardness Sets In:
- The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to change
- Pride builds up over time, making apologies more difficult
- Habits become stronger the longer they continue
- What’s possible today might not be possible tomorrow
Two Essential Reconciliations
Jesus’ teaching points us toward two kinds of reconciliation that we all need:
1. Reconciliation with God:
The Problem:
Sin creates distance between us and God, like a debt we can’t pay.
The Solution:
Confession clears the heart:
- Acknowledge what you’ve done wrong
- Ask God for forgiveness
- Accept His grace and mercy
- Let Him wipe the slate clean
The Result:
Your relationship with God is restored, and you can walk in freedom.
2. Reconciliation with One Another:
The Problem:
Broken relationships create barriers that block love and peace.
The Solution:
Forgiveness clears the path:
- Take responsibility for your part in the problem
- Ask for forgiveness from those you’ve hurt
- Offer forgiveness to those who have hurt you
- Work to rebuild trust and understanding
The Result:
Relationships are healed, and love can flow freely again.
The Urgency: If We Make Peace Now
Jesus emphasizes timing: “Make peace now, while you can.”
Why Now is Better Than Later:
In Our Relationship with God:
- Every day of unrepented sin makes the heart a little harder
- Grace is available now, but we don’t know about tomorrow
- The longer we wait, the more we miss out on God’s peace and joy
In Our Relationships with Others:
- Hurts tend to grow deeper over time if not addressed
- Pride builds up, making apologies more difficult
- The other person might not always be willing or available to reconcile
The Promise:
“If we make peace now, we will not face the judge then.”
When we settle our accounts with God and others now, we don’t have to worry about facing judgment later with unresolved issues.
October 24, 2025: Three Steps for Today
Based on Jesus’ teaching, here are three practical steps for reading the signs and making peace:
Reading the Signs in Daily Life
Here are some common signs that God might be calling you to action:
Signs You Need Reconciliation with God:
- You feel distant from God in prayer
- You avoid going to church or reading Scripture
- You feel guilty about specific actions or attitudes
- You’re living in ways that contradict your faith
- You’ve been avoiding confession for a long time
Signs You Need Reconciliation with Others:
- You avoid certain people or feel uncomfortable around them
- You think about past hurts or conflicts frequently
- You feel angry or resentful when someone’s name comes up
- Family gatherings or social events feel tense because of unresolved issues
- You know you’ve hurt someone and haven’t apologized
Signs You Need to Change Direction:
- The same problems keep recurring in your life
- Multiple trusted people are giving you similar advice
- You feel restless or unsettled about your current path
- Your current lifestyle is inconsistent with your values
- You keep hearing about opportunities or challenges that interest you
Remember: God is constantly communicating with you through your conscience, circumstances, and relationships. The question isn’t whether He’s speaking, but whether you’re listening and acting on what you hear. Read the signs, choose peace, and settle quickly with love.
A Simple Prayer for Today
Lord Jesus, you see that I’m good at reading the weather but not always good at reading what you’re doing in my life. Open my eyes to the signs you’re giving me. Show me where I need to reconcile with you and with others. Give me courage to make the first move toward peace, and help me to act quickly before pride or fear makes it harder. If I need to go to confession, give me the grace to do that. If I need to apologize to someone, give me the right words. Help me to settle quickly with love so that I can walk free with you. Amen.
