Beautiful Heaven Touches Earth

At times, rationality may not find it interesting and true. Some of us look it as meaningless. Do you want to know what it is? Here, you get this.

Emma was 8 years old who was terrified of the dark. There was not a day, Emma slept in her room peacefully, unless she was made conviced by her parents, of the monsters not present in her room. Emma’s father, Dr. Rodriguez, a rational pediatrician, had tried everything like, nightlights, logical explanations, even moving her bed near the door but nothing solved the problem.

One day, the grandma of Emma visited her in the evening. When the bedtime approached and Emma’s fear and anxiety raised, grandma sat on the bed and said something unexpected: Emma, do you know that you have a guardian angel standing right near the door?

Emma saw into the dark area of the room, No grandma, I don’t see anything there, said Emma.

Grandma smiled and said, that’s okay my dear, Angels are usually not visible to us, but they are real. Your angel is protecting you every single night from the time you were born. You know, he is probably very tall, with strong wings, and never tired of watching over you.

That was the first time in months, Emma slept peacefully. When her father asked how Grandma had achieved this, which months of his rational approaches couldn’t. The Grandma simply said, “Sometimes children understand what adults forget, that the invisible world is more real than the visible one.”

Yes, at times we do not have answers for our doubts but faith has it. Emma was in need of some explanations what her father trained not to see. So also some of us are.

In today’s gospel, Jesus responds to Nathanael saying, You will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man. This imagination of Jesus directly recalls Jacob’s dream at Bethel, where he saw a ladder reaching from earth to heaven with angels ascending and descending that we read in Genesis 28: 12-17.

Thus Jesus says himself is the new Jacob’s ladder. Jesus is the connection that we have between the Heaven and the earth. The angelic realm is not somewhere far and an ethereal concept but it is in earthly existence.

We are celebrating today the feast of archangels who represent different aspects of God’s intervention in human history. Michael, the warrior; Gabriel, the messenger; Raphael, the healer. They confirm to us the evident presence of God in our life, in our times battles with evil, in our times of doubts, in our times of sickness.

In the first reading today gives us a sight of heaven which Prophet Daniel sees in his vision. In his vision, he sees thousands upon thousands depicts the innumerable angelic hosts serving and standing in attendance around the fiery throne of the Ancient of Days (God).

Not only here but throughout the scripture there are many occassions like announcing the birth of Jesus (Luke 1:26-38), providing protection for Elisha (2 Kings 6:17), offering comfort to Jesus (Matthew 4:11), and even proclaiming resurrection of Jesus (Matthew 28:5-7) which proves angels as not only messengers and servants of God but also the bridges that bridge the gap between the divine and human.

Psalm 91:11 we read For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. This is not merely a metaphor but it is a reality. In the book of Tobit we know how angel Raphael journey with Tobias which tells us how an angel can accompany us on our life’s difficult journeys.

In Hebrews 1:14 we read Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation? thus it is true that invisible world serves the visible world and we are surrounded by more help than we realize.

There are also many saints who had real-hand experience with angel, you know?

Saint John Vianney, the Curé of Ars, frequently spoke with his guardian angel and encouraged his parishioners to do the same. He said, “Our Guardian Angels are our most faithful friends, because they are with us day and night, always and everywhere. We ought often to invoke them.” He taught his people how to ask their guardian angels to wake them for morning prayers and it worked.

Saint Padre Pio had extraordinary encounters with angels throughout his life. He often spoke of seeing angels bringing him the prayers of people from around the world. When asked about guardian angels, he said, “Our Guardian Angel  never leaves us, even when we are disgusting God with our behavior.”

These saints understood that the angelic realm is as real as the physical world, and often more helpful in our daily lives.

Living the Gospel in Daily Life

How often do we experience what we call “coincidences” that might actually be angelic interventions? the unexpected phone call from a friend whom just we needed the most. The strangers who appears with help at an unexpected right moment. The sudden inspiration that solves the problem which we were fighting with for weeks. Likewise many instances which we label as coincidences are the works of our gaurdian angel, but mostly they go unrealized by us.

In all our life’s moments of evil the archangels are fighting for us, leading us, and healing us. We must realize that.

September 29 – Challenge for the day

Jesus through the promise to Nathanael challenges our modern skepticism. Today we live in a culture which accepts only what can be measured, photographed, experimented and scientifically proven. But Jesus insists the invisible realm is not only real but actively engaging with our visible world.

Increasing loneliness, hopelessness, sickness, depression are not because of absense of feelings, but it is because of the absense of spiritual beings in our life. We long for someone to be us always, but already we have our angels tasked to be with us, only we need to recognize it.

This challenge isn’t to become superstitious or to see angels everywhere. It’s to develop the spiritual sensitivity to recognize that reality extends beyond what our physical senses can detect. It is to live with the awareness that we’re surrounded by divine help and protection.

This feast is a challenge for us to introspect about our prayer lives. Do we actually believe in angelic assistance? Do we invoke our guardian angels’ help or we rely only on human resources?

The danger is not asking too much to angels but it is asking too little. How different would our days be if we truly believed that heaven was opened above us, with angels ascending and descending on our behalf? And Beautiful Heaven Touches Earth.

Let our Prayer for today be,

Jesus Christ our Lord, Nathanael was promised to see heaven opened and angels ascending and descending. Open our eyes to see the presence of angels around us in our lives. We pray through the intercession of Saints Michaelm Gabriel and Raphael, that we may live with the awareness that heaven touches the earth in every moment of our lives. Amen
