Welcome to today’s Catholic Daily Readings for Saturday, 12 September 2026, the Optional Memorial of the Most Holy Name of Mary. Paul warns us to flee from idolatry and hold fast to the Lord’s table. And Jesus says a tree is known by its fruit, and a wise person builds on rock. A day about building our lives on something that lasts.

First Reading

Paul urges the Corinthians to flee from idolatry. We cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons, he says. The one bread and the one cup of the Eucharist make us one body in Christ, so we must not divide our hearts between God and idols.

1 Corinthians 10:14-22

My beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

Gospel

Jesus says every tree is known by its fruit: a good tree cannot bear bad fruit. The good person brings good out of the heart’s treasure. Then He tells of two builders, one who dug deep and built on rock, and one who built on sand. When the flood came, only the house on rock stood.

Luke 6:43-49

At that time: Jesus said to his disciples, No good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Short Reflection

Jesus ends His great sermon with a question every one of us has to answer eventually: what are you building your life on? He tells of two houses that may have looked identical from the outside. The difference was invisible, underground, in the foundation. Then the flood came, and the difference became the only thing that mattered. One stood. One collapsed.

And Jesus is clear about what the rock is. It’s not just hearing His words, plenty of people do that. It’s hearing them and putting them into practice. Faith that stays in our heads is a house on sand. Faith that reaches our hands and our habits is a house on rock. The storms of life will test which one we’ve built, so it’s worth checking the foundation now, in the calm.

On this memorial of the Holy Name of Mary, we remember the one whose whole life was built on rock. When the angel came, she said yes and lived that yes to the foot of the cross. Her name has been a refuge for Christians for centuries, because she shows us what a life built entirely on God looks like: unshaken, even at Calvary.

Prayer

Lord, I want to build my life on rock. Keep me from settling for a faith that only listens but never acts. Give me the grace to put Your words into practice, in my choices, my habits, my daily love, so that when the storms come, my house will stand. Through the prayers of Mary, whose holy name we honour today, keep me faithful. Amen.

Saint of the Day — The Most Holy Name of Mary

Today the Church keeps the optional memorial of the Most Holy Name of Mary. Just as we honour the Holy Name of Jesus, this feast honours the name of His mother, a name Christians have called upon for comfort and protection for centuries. The memorial was extended to the whole Church after a great victory at Vienna in 1683 was attributed to Our Lady’s intercession.
