Catholic Daily Readings for 21 July 2026

Welcome to today’s Catholic Daily Readings for Tuesday, 21 July 2026. Micah marvels at a God who delights in mercy, and Jesus tells us that anyone who does the Father’s will is His brother, His sister, His mother. Two readings, one message: God wants us close.

First Reading

Micah ends his book with wonder: Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity? He praises the Lord who does not stay angry forever but delights in showing mercy, who casts our sins into the depths of the sea.

Micah 7:14-15, 18-20

Shepherd your people with your staff, the flock of your inheritance, who dwell alone in a forest in the midst of a garden land; let them graze in Bashan and Gilead as in the days of old. As in the days when you came out of the land of Egypt, I will show them marvelous things. Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger for ever, because he delights in steadfast love. He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. You will show faithfulness to Jacob and steadfast love to Abraham, as you have sworn to our fathers from the days of old.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 85: 2-4, 5-6, 7-8

Response: Let us see, O Lord, your mercy.

Gospel

While Jesus is teaching, someone says His mother and brothers are outside. Jesus stretches out His hand toward His disciples and says, Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother.

Matthew 12:46-50

At that time: While Jesus was speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And stretching out his hand towards his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

Short Reflection

Put today’s two readings side by side and something beautiful appears. Micah stands amazed at a God who loves to forgive, who throws our sins into the sea and remembers them no more. And then Jesus, in the Gospel, opens His family circle wide and says: anyone who does the Father’s will belongs to Me.

This is not a God who keeps us at arm’s length. He forgives us fully, then draws us in as family. Notice how Jesus defines that family. Not by blood, not by status, but by doing the Father’s will. The door into the closest possible relationship with Christ is simply this: seek what God wants and do it.

So the mercy Micah praises and the closeness Jesus offers meet in one place, a life that says yes to God. Forgiven and welcomed home, we’re invited to live as His true family today.

Prayer

Merciful God, You delight in forgiving me and You call me Your own. Thank You for casting my sins into the depths of the sea. Teach me to do Your will today, so that I may truly live as a brother or sister of Your Son, Jesus. Amen.

Saint of the Day — St. Lawrence of Brindisi

Today the Church honours St. Lawrence of Brindisi (1559-1619), a Capuchin friar and Doctor of the Church. Gifted with an astonishing memory and mastery of many languages, he preached across Europe, advised popes and kings, and once led an army into battle armed only with a crucifix. Yet his heart was fixed on Christ and the Word of God. His learning always served love. Read the full life, feast day, patronage, and prayer of St. Lawrence of Brindisi here.
