Catholic Daily Readings for Tuesday, 22 September 2026, teach that belonging to Jesus is more than knowing His name. His true family is formed by those who hear God’s Word and allow it to shape their choices.

First Reading

The Book of Proverbs contrasts honest work with proud ambition, justice with violence, and care for the poor with a closed heart. God looks beyond outward success and weighs the intentions within us.

Proverbs 21:1-6, 10-13

The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will. Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart. To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice. Haughty eyes and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, are sin. The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty. The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapour and a snare of death. The soul of the wicked desires evil; his neighbour finds no mercy in his eyes. When a scoffer is punished, the simple becomes wise; when a wise man is instructed, he gains knowledge. The Righteous One observes the house of the wicked; he throws the wicked down to ruin. Whoever closes his ear to the cry of the poor will himself call out and not be answered.

Responsorial Psalm

Response: Guide me, Lord, in the path of your commands.

Gospel

When Jesus is told that His mother and relatives are waiting outside, He teaches that those who hear God’s Word and act upon it belong to His family.

Luke 8:19-21

At that time: His mother and his brothers came to Jesus, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”

Reflection

The Family Photograph That Lied…

A beautiful family photograph hung in the centre of a house. Everyone was smiling. Yet two sisters in that photograph had not spoken for three years. One day, their mother looked at it and quietly asked, “What good is a picture of togetherness when love has disappeared from the house?”

Jesus asks a similar question in today’s Gospel. Family cannot remain only a name, a blood tie, or a place in a photograph. In God’s household, belonging becomes real when His Word enters our choices.

Jesus is not rejecting Mary. She is the clearest example of His teaching. She heard God’s Word, trusted it, and gave her whole life to it. Her physical motherhood and her faithful obedience meet in one complete yes.

Proverbs brings this obedience into ordinary life. God’s Word must reach our money, work, speech, ambition, and treatment of the poor. Listening at Mass means little if we close our ears to someone crying for help.

Many people know Christian prayers, wear a cross, and call Jesus Lord. But the Gospel asks a sharper question: Does His Word change the way we forgive, spend, speak, and judge?

Do not leave God’s Word outside like a relative waiting at the door. Bring it into the house. Let it sit at your table, enter your decisions, and repair the love that has become only a photograph.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me into Your family. Give me a listening heart and the courage to live what I hear. Let Your Word enter my relationships, work, decisions, and care for those in need. Make my life a true yes to You. Amen.
